History of Guelaguetza
The Guelaguetza has a rich history rooted in indigenous traditions of Oaxaca. Originally, it was an earth-based religious celebration centered around the worship of corn and the corn god, reflecting the agricultural importance of maize to the local cultures.
In the early 20th century, after a severe earthquake in the 1920s devastated Oaxaca City, local leaders reorganized the Guelaguetza as a statewide cultural event to help rebuild the community’s morale. Renamed “La Guelaguetza de la Raza,” the festival began to take on a more modern form. Over time, it evolved from a traditional ritual into a performance-oriented event, attracting both national and international attention.
