Guelaguetza 2026 took place on Monday, July 20 and Monday, July 27 at the Auditorio Guelaguetza in Oaxaca de Juárez, with morning and afternoon performances at 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

Known as Los Lunes del Cerro, Guelaguetza is Oaxaca’s signature annual cultural celebration. Delegations from across the state’s eight regions come together through dance, music, traditional clothing and community presentations that represent the cultural diversity of Oaxaca.

The 2026 edition was the 94th Guelaguetza and formed the centerpiece of a month-long official program with more than 140 cultural, artistic, gastronomic and sporting activities throughout Oaxaca City and surrounding communities.

About the Festival

What is Guelaguetza?

Guelaguetza is an annual celebration of Oaxaca’s regional cultures, community identity and traditions of reciprocity. The word is associated with a Zapotec concept of giving, mutual support and reciprocal exchange within a community.

The best-known performances take place during the Lunes del Cerro and its Octava at the Auditorio Guelaguetza on Cerro del Fortín. Delegations present regional dances, music, ceremonial traditions and clothing in a large open-air auditorium overlooking Oaxaca City.

Guelaguetza 2026 dates and showtimes

Monday, July 20, 2026: The first Lunes del Cerro featured two official presentations at the Auditorio Guelaguetza, beginning at 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

Monday, July 27, 2026: The Octava del Lunes del Cerro returned with the same official schedule, at 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

The main performances were held at the Auditorio Guelaguetza / Rotonda de las Azucenas on Cerro del Fortín. The wider July program extended well beyond the two Mondays, with citywide cultural events, fairs, concerts and community celebrations.

Ticket Information

Guelaguetza 2026 ticket prices and seating

The Oaxaca government sold reserved seating for Sections A and B through SuperBoletos. The official May 15 presale prices were $1,476 MXN for Section A and $1,166 MXN for Section B, plus service charges.

Regular sales opened on June 1 at $1,632 MXN for Section A and $1,321 MXN for Section B, plus service charges. The available A and B inventory sold out in less than an hour on the first day of general sales.

Sections C and D were free for all four official presentations. These sections were not reserved paid seating and were intended to preserve public access to the festival.

Guelaguetza 2026 program highlights

The official Julio, Mes de la Guelaguetza 2026 calendar included more than 140 cultural, artistic, gastronomic and sporting activities across Oaxaca. The main auditorium performances were only one part of the month-long celebration.

1. Convites: Official public invitations and processional events were scheduled for July 1, 10 and 11.
2. Calendas de las Culturas: Major cultural processions were held on July 18 and July 25.
3. Donají… La Leyenda: The traditional dance-theater production was presented on July 19 and July 26 at the Auditorio Guelaguetza.
4. Feria del Mezcal: Oaxaca’s major mezcal fair ran from July 17 through July 28 with producers, food, crafts and other regional products.
5. Lunes del Cerro: The four principal Guelaguetza performances took place July 20 and July 27 at 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

What to expect during Guelaguetza

Guelaguetza is much larger than a single auditorium show. During July, Oaxaca City fills with processions, concerts, markets, regional fairs and visitors from throughout Mexico and abroad.

1. The auditorium performances are highly structured. Each delegation presents music, dance and traditions connected to its community and region.
2. Public celebrations spread throughout the city. Calendas, convites, concerts, fairs and food events create a festival atmosphere well beyond Cerro del Fortín.
3. Expect heavy demand. Hotels, transportation and paid tickets can fill quickly, particularly around the two Lunes del Cerro weekends.
4. Plan for traffic and walking. Road restrictions, large crowds and the hilltop auditorium can make vehicle travel slower than normal.
5. Make time for Oaxaca beyond the main show. The month-long program includes food, mezcal, artisan and community events that are central to the overall Guelaguetza experience.

For most visitors, Centro Histórico is the most convenient base for Guelaguetza. Staying near the Zócalo, Santo Domingo or El Llano puts you close to many citywide events, restaurants and public celebrations while keeping much of central Oaxaca walkable.

Reforma can also work well for travelers who prefer to stay outside the busiest historic-center streets. Wherever you stay, book early—Guelaguetza creates unusually high hotel demand across Oaxaca City.
